I recommend this biomedical review of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in palliative care on Reach MD.  It is eligible for free continuing education credit (0.5) and has a great audiovisual explanation of the action of the mu-opioid receptor in pain perception within the first 7 minutes.

To me, it makes it clear how useful it is to have LAcs/EAMPs as part of the palliative care team.  Acupuncturists bring non-drug pain relief to help reduce MED (morphine equivalent dose) load and have comprehensive training in food-as-medicine for teaching patients self-care tips in foods that move the stool and those that soften the stool.  Team-care is a wonderful way to work.

Recent research into acupuncture and the mu-opioid receptor supports what is observed clinically--that acupuncture works with the mu-opioid receptor (releases endogenous opioids) 
so patients have pain relief with fewer pain meds, and can work with their prescribing provider to reduce their MED.
A lower MED leads to less complex pain medication profile and reduced risk of opioid-induced constipation.
